The key point in this article is to understand the value of vitamin B5 for brain tissue.  Vitamin B5 is the vitamin that basically runs the brain.  Vitamin B5 is essential to metabolize choline.  Choline is the step before many of the neurotransmitters are produced. Choline is metabolized (broken down) and converted into some of the neurotransmitters.  Vitamin B5 is needed for brain metabolism.  Also the ratio of vitamin B5 to choline is vital.  Dr Bob advised the ratio of vitamin B5 to brain supplements, such as phosphatidyl choline, acetyl-L-carnitine, L-phenylalanine, and other such supplements, is about one to three.  Furthermore, Dr. Bob stated science is well aware of the need for high requirements of vitamin B5 in brain supplementation.  He said this is overlooked by almost all MD's and scientists who write about anti-aging nutritional brain protocols.

High requirements for B5 are necessary in order for the chemical reactions in the brain to take place.  For example, many anti-aging of the brain protocols recommend 500-1500 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine.  For 1500 mg of acetyl-L-carnitine Dr. Bob advises you take 500 mg of vitamin B5, to provide enough B5 to metabolize the ALC.  The efficiency of the ALC will be reduced if the right amounts of B5 are not used.  This will result in not getting your money's worth from the materials you have purchased such as the supplements and books.  You may receive little or no improvement at all without vitamin B5.

There are more concentrated choline products coming out as supplements, such as cytidine-choline (CDP) which is used in Europe for many brain trauma conditions.  According to Dr. Bob, more potent choline supplements will need ratios of one half to one or even one-to-one for vitamin B5 to these more concentrated cholines.  For example, in some instances 125 mg to 250 mg of B5 will be needed with 250 mg of cytidine-choline.

Dr. Bob notes - Dr. Bob reminded everyone supplementing large quantities of B5, such as 500 mg to 1000 mg a day, it can be slightly acidic on the stomach.  Therefore Dr. Bob recommended crackers or something similar to neutralize the slight production of acid.  Also biotin and B5 work together.  Dr. Bob advised supplementing B5 and biotin at the same time.  He recommended 2-3 grams of biotin daily.

In conclusion, Dr. Bob advised B5 be used in any protocols for nutrient supplementation for brain tissue. The right ratios and amounts are important.
